FAIR’s Financial Overview
Public support forms the backbone of FAIR’s operations. Approximately 60% of FAIR’s revenue comes from subscriptions to Extra! and contributions from our community of supporters. Grants from foundations and public charities comprise about 38% of our total operating budget. FAIR does not accept corporate funding, governmental grants or advertising of any kind.
FAIR’s critique of the corporate media is that the web of financial interests that sponsor news gathering and influence content decisions are hidden from the public. Most major media organizations are not funded by their viewing audience, but rather by corporate sponsors who are more interested in advertising to potential consumers than informing citizens.
For every dollar donated to FAIR, 80 cents funds our research and program activities–our reports and studies, our magazine Extra! and radio show CounterSpin, online activism campaigns and press outreach. FAIR is run as a collective with the entire staff contributing to organizational decisions.
All employees begin with a base salary of $35,000 with a pay increase of $1,000 a year.
Dedicated public support has sustained FAIR for the past 25 years and has allowed us to remain a strong proponent of free speech and critical journalism. With your sustained support, FAIR will continue to serve the public interest with rigorous monitoring of the corporate media.
