Guest List for Fox's "Special Report" and CNN's "Wolf Blitzer Reports"

FAIR's study of guests on Fox's Special Report with Brit Hume and CNN's Wolf Blitzer Reports identified the Democratic or Republican party affiliations of professional political guests, and identified all guests as either conservatives or non-conservatives. Non-conservative guests could range from center-right to left, and also included guests with no discernable ideology.

Although FAIR did not attempt to identify how many guests were liberals or progressives, it is clear that virtually none appeared on Special Report with Brit Hume . Four of the six Democrats who appeared on the show are well-known centrist or conservative figures in their party--senators Joe Lieberman, John Breaux, Bob Graham and South Carolina Rep. John Spratt. Only one, New Jersey Sen. Jon Corzine, is almost always regarded as liberal. (The sixth Democrat was diplomat Richard Holbrooke, best known for his role in the Kosovo War.)

On CNN's Wolf Blitzer Reports, guests were generally clustered around the ideological center, in keeping with CNN's narrow centrist political tone. Leaving aside the partisan guests (38 Republicans and 29 Democrats) and the guests discussing non-political subjects, most were either non-ideological news reporters or pundits with only slightly left- or right-of-center views.

Only a small handful of CNN's guests who were not professional politicians had strong ties to conservative or progressive movements. On the right were religious activist Jerry Falwell, David Limbaugh (brother of Rush and a conservative activist) and Jerry Taylor, a free-market energy economist with the Cato Institute. On the left, only two could be be seen as "movement progressives": Ralph Nader and-- arguably-- Elizabeth Birch of the moderate gay-rights group Human Rights Campaign (which often endorses moderate Republican candidates for office).
