In Howard Kurtz’s latest column (8/2/10), the Washington Post media reporter bemoans the new media atmosphere as a “search-and-destroy culture” that is “as likely to vilify journalists as political and corporate leaders.” Kurtz counts himself among those vilified journalists, citing recent criticism over his defense (7/22/10) of Fox News‘ handling of the Shirley Sherrod debacle:
I know what it’s like to be caught in the crossfire. When I reported that Fox News did not air the Sherrod video until after she had been fired, I got hammered by the left, and some commentators just ignored the chronology. (And conspiracy theorists pounced when I left out that a Fox online story had run an hour or so before the firing–hardly the reason that Sherrod was canned.)
Those “conspiracy theorists” apparently include FAIR, which pointed out Kurtz’s oversight on this blog two weeks ago (7/23/10). But FAIR is not alone; the L.A. Times (7/24/10) and Media Matters (7/29/10) made similar points.
Do you really have to be a “conspiracy theorist,” though, to think that a White House that’s worried that a story will appear on Fox News would keep an eye on Fox‘s websites? As FAIR noted in its original criticism:
If the question is whether Sherrod was “done in” by Fox, you have to ask a question that doesn’t seem to concern Kurtz: How did the doctored videotape come to the attention of the Obama administration? As the Media Matters timeline discloses, many blogs and conservative websites, including Foxnews.com and Fox Nation, were discussing Sherrod’s “racism” hours before her resignation. Isn’t it likely that the Fox News website was among the most prominent of these; and, in turn, isn’t it possible that that’s where the White House learned about the story?
While Kurtz seeks to court sympathy – by declaring himself a victim “caught in the crossfire”… he trivializes those who seek to hold him accountable [for his enabling of the racist assault on the character of Ms. Sherrod] by labeling them “conspiracy theorists”. Kurtz even goes as far as suggesting Fox was not responsible for the injury to Sherrod – in his claim that their reporting was “hardly the reason that Sherrod was canned”. Kurtz’ column is crafted to make the perpetrators of the original assault invisible…
Does he think only political and corporate criminal leaders should be vilified, but not their media flunkeys?
Or, more likely, he thinks elite criminals shouldn’t be vilfied at all, because since the elites are above the law, by definition they cannot be criminals. We know that’s the ideology of the MSM in general, and especially the WaPo.

Why are all of these people such liars and cowards? Fox could have checked the actual video. So could Ben Jealous, Jim Messina, and Tom Vilsack. Instead, they took the unsupported word of Andrew Breitbart, hardly a reliable or objective source, and defamed an innocent person without even bothering to contact her.
Fox News ran a story because they liked the story line. They didn’t want to know if it was factual or not. They just wanted to scare people. And Vilsack, Messina, and Jealous promptly dropped over in a heap. The next day, Fox News was attacking the Obama administration for having capitulated so easily.
The only thing that can be said in favor of Fox is that the other networks were almost as bad. Only CNN, as far as I know, actually tried to track down the story and check to see if it was factual or not.

Bob Inglis (R-S.C.) says he knows firsthand the risky business of refusing to call President Obama a “socialist” from his primary election defeat earlier this summer. “I figured out early in the race I was taking a risk by being unwilling to call the President a socialist,” explained the outgoing congressman. “I’d get asked a question and they’d all wait to see if I’d use the word – socialist – they were throwing around. I wouldn’t. Because I don’t think that’s what he is.” Inglis elaborated, “To call him a socialist is to demean the office and stir up a passion that we need to be calming, rather than constantly stirring up.”

Yes there is a perception among the college educated(newly)that the right side of the isle has all this horrible baggage .It is a huge problem of perception that must be overcome.It is also false.or at least just as false as the left who talks a good game but lies through their teeth for the sake of aquired power.FOX and other like minded people are changing that perception by I would say (in my humble opinion)telling the “truth”.Finally speaking up over the overwhelming din of Liberal media.What is cooler than alternative to status quo thought speak?

that’s why i’m discussing states… and gerrymandering congressional districts have nothing to do with this…populations self sort throughout a state…i live in a district gerrymandered to be safe republican, oh-14…the bulk of the district is homogeneous. [white flight suburban, exurban and rural] the rest is very mixed, both race, income, education and party…no conclusion can be drawn from the demographics here…
penn currently has more democratic house reps than dem..their senators are usually one of each..[two dems at the moment subject to change] and the state has voted democratic presidents for at least the last 5 elections…it’s blue at the ends and rural south in the center…
as for wyoming not being in the bottom ten in college grads… we’re talking about percentage of the population without degrees, not number of people without them…2 of the top 100 counties in percentage of grads are in wyoming…obama won them both, going away according to the national journal..
