This week on CounterSpin: The “what could possibly go wrong?” meme might be overused, but it’s hard not to think it, watching the government create new tools and powers for countering “disinformation” that will be handed to a president-elect who calls journalists “the lowest form of life.” Donald Trump didn’t create the present terrain, however, and pretending that fearmongering and watchlists and looking the other way are all newly minted will not serve us. In fact, we can look to history to help us understand what’s happening, and what we can do to resist it.
We’ll talk history with Ellen Schrecker. She’s a retired professor of American history at Yeshiva University and the author of a number of books, including Many Are the Crimes: McCarthyism in America and No Ivory Tower: McCarthyism in the Universities.

Our quick look back at recent press includes the reluctance to accurately label presidential lies, the desperate search for pro-Trump columnists and the racist record of NBC‘s latest hire.

Donald Trump is now selected president and how He has to work for the country. Corporate Media was saying, Rusian Hackers play a role in the victory of Donald Trump, and some are saying other words.
But the reality is Donald Trump is President and we must have to work with him for next 4 years at least.
Sorry, the history side of this just isn’t honest. In 1960, you could argue that McCarthy’s claims were baselessly aimed at leftist sympathizers. You can’t say that anymore. The Venona Project and Kremlin admissions prove beyond any reasonable doubt that there were an enormous number of Communist spies- not sympathizers- in America.
From the Venona code wikipedia article:
“The decrypts show the U.S. and other nations were targeted in major espionage campaigns by the Soviet Union as early as 1942. Among those identified are Julius and Ethel Rosenberg; Alger Hiss; Harry Dexter White,[13] the second-highest official in the Treasury Department; Lauchlin Currie,[25] a personal aide to Franklin Roosevelt; and Maurice Halperin,[26] a section head in the Office of Strategic Services.”
“The Office of Strategic Services, the predecessor to the CIA, housed at one time or another between fifteen and twenty Soviet spies”
“The War Production Board, the Board of Economic Warfare, the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs and the Office of War Information, included at least half a dozen Soviet sources each among their employees.”
It’s not debatable anymore. There was a huge problem with Communist spies in America at that time. Being a spy, and supplying a foreign government with sensitive information, is a serious crime in every country in the world. And you have to remember, at this time every Communist party member was a Stalinist. There were no lower case ‘c’ communists or Trotskyites allowed in the Communist Party, and historians like this seem to brush right over the support that Joseph Stalin, who murdered about four times as many people as Hitler, had among the left at that time. Frida Kahlo, W.E.B. DuBois, etc were not “communists” by today’s use of that word. They were unequivocal supporters of Stalin’s fascism. That’s why Harry Truman was the one to really start cracking down on Communism with the anti-Communist executive order he issued long before McCarthy! Contrary to what Ellen just said, even some progressives considered the threat of Communism to be a very serious problem.

It’s very ironic that the modern left refuses to accept any connection between communism and Stalinism, but still insists on idolizing vocal Stalinists as their ideological kin. The first step to learning from history is being honest about it. If we can’t count on our teachers to do this, then there is little hope for students to intelligently analyze history’s lessons.
“Corporate Media was saying, Rusian Hackers play a role in the victory of Donald Trump, and some are saying other words.”
No, sane people are making the point that the public has seen no evidence for Russian hacking of the DNC.
You’ve posted a false equivalence.
