This week on CounterSpin: For months now, hundreds and then thousands of indigenous people have been taking part in peaceful protests at the Sacred Stones camp in North Dakota. They’re protesting the construction of what’s called the Dakota Access pipeline, slated to carry fracked oil across the state and across the Missouri River. The Standing Rock Sioux say the Army Corps of Engineers approved the pipeline without their consent. For many people, what’s happening right now in North Dakota is a crucial story of a frontline fight of indigenous people against extractive industry—and on behalf of humanity, really, and the planet.
So far, though, for corporate media, it’s not much of a story at all. As we record, none of the big 3 tv networks have so much as mentioned it.
We’ll hear about the pipeline protests from Kandi Mossett, Native energy & climate campaign organizer with the Indigenous Environmental Network. She joins us from the Sacred Stones camp to talk about this evolving, undercovered story.

Thank you for covering Sacred Stone Camp and protest.
I fear the government and corporate response to this protest. “Manifest Destiny” could be on the ropes, as it should be, with a successful protest like this could be.
To help protect the people there I suggest you tell a history of mercenary provocateurs and the “outside agitator” direct action that the U.S. and any government threatened by rising public awareness to peaceful protest.
The media so often complies with reports of authoritarian fears of violence, when it is they who instigate it as a tactic to divide a growing movement and turn away public opinion with false flag violence and negative stories about leaders.
The public who are so easily distracted, have so little sense of power, and a meager at best historical context, on almost every important issue from mental health to our environment , need to be hand held and walked through the information necessary to be able to have a valid opinion.
We are so failed by our mainstream media.

WHITE MAN CRIMINALIZING NATIVES — HOW DID IT START?
Actually, by a scumbag named Thomas Jefferson, the mainstream media of his day, for in his Declaration of Independence he broadcast this piece of propaganda:
“all men are created equal, that they are endowed
by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,
that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness…
the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages,
whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction
of all ages, sexes and conditions.”
For though it was the white man that gave blankets saturated with smallpox virus to the Indians killing tends of thousands, even though our Army had a standing order to waste every man, woman, child, baby and puppy in the Indian villages we subjected to genocide, to justify such a fake morality the mainstream media had to create the illusion that native Americans had no morality.
And so it is today, for just as soon as shots get fired at this pipeline protest or arrests made for suspected violence, then mainstream media will come to life, by broadcasting how the natives are like “savages” of old full of strife, destroying the peace and tranquility we so long for in life.
~ All we hear is “Natives, Natives, and Natives”… This is NOT a ‘Native’ thing, all protests lime these were NEVER just about Natives… THEY are the ones standing up in solidarity, because the rest of us, inclusing farmers, etc. WILL NOT… But thank Creator that all colors of man and woman arenoining in the ‘snowballing’ of this event.. It’s about OUR WATER… and so much more… This is about OUR survival as human beings…

For decades they fought against the U.S. government and the Feds won, and now you all are just a bunch of losers, bitter about having lost on the battlefield so you’re trying to whitewash your image so even if you can’t win on the battlefield, you can win the PR game.”

It’s terrifying that the U S gov’t and corporate mediae have avoided/ignored these activities for many months. Terrifying because it shows they all continue to refuse recognition of Native voices and needs. I stand with you. Thank you.
