Although I do agree with your comments on false balances, you have lost any balance on your constant defense of Hugo Chavez. This is a man who changed the constitution so he could be elected forever, fires judges not to his liking, muzzles the press and commits any number of offences against what progressives would call good government. Just because he stands up against the United States does not make him a figure to be admired in a continent of fragile democracies, no matter how incomplete, inaccurate, unbalanced or misleading American media is when reporting on him. Much the same could be said of his hero Fidel Castro and there are few who call him a proponent of democracy. At least to his credit, Chavez does hold elections; Castro never did.
Chavez did not change the constitution, the Venezuelan people did so with a very solid majority in an election run by a system that Jimmy Carter calls the best in the world. In fact before that referendum there was another that tried to make over 60 changes in the constitution, including eliminating presidential term limits. The opposition ran a hysterically mendacious campaign, and the referendum was rejected by a slim majority. Chavez accepted defeat gracefully, saying that for such an important thing as changing the constitution it was better to lose by a tiny margin than to win by one.
As to muzzling the press, this is laughable to anyone who reads Venezuelan newspapers or watches the big television stations. They virulently criticize Chavez and his government every day. El Universal has a feature called “Daily News,” which is a selection of articles in English. See for yourself, don’t just believe what our media tell you.
I would like to know more about cases where Chavez has fired judges not to his liking. If I missed something I want to know about it. However, if this is a reference to Judge Afiuni, I should to point out that she was removed for releasing a wealthy business man on bail without letting anyone know that she was going to. He left the courtroom, jumped on a motorcycle, and was on a plane to Miami before anyone knew he was released. This was so egregious that Chavez commented on it, hoping she would be prosecuted fully. In fact Chavez has in many cases acted in a way that respects the independence of the courts. Much of the court system is controlled by his opponents, and they have a sorry record of colluding with big landowners who murder peasants and other bourgeois who are enabled to oppress the poor. So Chavez is to be damned for the corruption of the courts (if he actually does not “fire” corrupt judges), and on the other hand would be damned for firing corrupt judges (since that would be “meddling with the courts”). That doesn’t leave him much room to maneuver.
I am a progressive and I follow things in Venezuela closely, even to the point of spending some time there. I can’t think of any “offenses against what progressives would call good government.” I wonder what I have been missing.
In comparison with what the overprivileged, which ran all the governmenats in Latin America all the way up to through the 1970’s with violence and terror, Cahvez is a superman! The immoderate so-called “middle class” engaged in wholesale murder, and every other form of intimidation, such as torture, very severe beatings and incarceration for no reason at all. Come to think of it, I myself am a better person than any of these fascistic “leaders.” As for critics of Chavez I say, when you get down to the concrete facts of history, he stands out as a giant among midgets.
