ABC This Week (9/25/11):
CHRISTINE AMANPOUR: And coming up, Rick Perry on the ropes.
PERRY: Yep, there may be slicker candidates and there may be smoother debaters, but I know what I believe in, and I’m going to stand on that belief every day. I will guide this country with a deep, deep rudder.
AMANPOUR: Can the new frontrunner come back from a shaky debate performance? Or is Chris Christie waiting in the wings to steal his thunder?
New York Times (9/26/11):
After Perry’s Debate Showing, Eyes Turn Toward Christie
Washington Post (9/26/11):
Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s recent stumbles–his rambling attempt at last week’s GOP presidential debate to attack former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney‘s flip-flopping is a prime example–have renewed speculation that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie might rethink his “no go” decision on the 2012 race.

The fundamental problem for the Republicans is the deep debate between the elite and the base. This year the base is not interested in factors that will lead to general election success, although the establishment is. Therefore we have to go through this constant search for a candidate acceptable to both. Democrats have a similar problem, but the base tends to be more interested in electable candidates than the establishment is. The Republicans have decided on pandering to the base to get them to the polls and continuing this process in office. The Democrats will do the minimum necessary to mobilize the base during the election and will then ignore them once they are in office (until the next election comes around).
None of the GOP candidates can survive the gauntlet of litmus tests presented by the so-called Tea Party. Always a fragile coalition, the Republican party cannot regain power if any of the fringe groups pull their support, so for now the Tea Party holds the upper hand in anointing the next-big-thing, and there is every reason to believe we’ll see more revolving door action as each candidate rises enough for both recognition and head-lopping. One thing that is occurring is quite a bit of money is being burned as each candidate rises, attracts donations, spends and ultimately fails to meet the unrealistic expectations of a Tea Party that has no positive message and is merely a collection of negative requirements.
For anyone watching, this is NOT the way the liberal faction of the Democratic party should be trying to accomplish its goals of impressing a progressive agenda on the national party.
I am a tea party member. We have brought the constitution back into the forefront of all discussions concerning the future of this country. That was always our goal, and i believe we have accomplished much.Next we hope to help to remove that person who we see as clearly beyond redemption.Barrack Obama. We will come together with conservatives,Republicans and yes Democrats- to remove him from office, and give America some choices more in keeping with the ideals of this great land. You will see a turnout in droves of people who see this administration as a massive failure.Don’t kid yourself that it will be otherwise.
Michael e hasn’t touch on the Constitution at all. The Constitution says that it and treaties signed by the president and ratified by Congress are the law of the land. Reagan signed and Congress ratified the Convention Against Torture. Bush and Cheney confessed to authorizing torture but no Tea Party member in or out of the government, has called for prosecution of confessed war criminals. Bush also authorized spying on US citizens, a violation of the Constitution. The corporations that violated the constitutional rights of citizens in service to the president, one of the marks of a police state, were given amnesty by Congress, but Bush and other co-conspirators who violated citizens’ constitutional rights were not.
That’s right, Robert. The Baggers don’t give a damn about the Constitution (and, more importantly, The Bill Of Rights). I’d be surprised if the Tea-Baggers got riled up about Mr. Obama’s latest violation of his oath (the murder of Anwar al-Awlaki, an American citizen); the things you mention, and President’s continuation (and amplification) of Bush/Cheney policies. The Baggers are simpletons and nincompoops who simply don’t like the President, and understand nothing about society, culture, the law, and history. (Look at the musings of the above bagger/troll for a perfect example of what I’m talking about.) There are ample reasons to be outraged over the President’s violations of the Constitution (the real violations you and I have named, not the imaginary ones the Baggers salivate over), but the chumps on the Right are screeching about “Obamacare,” for Christ’s sake. Meanwhile, they want to forward the freight of the super-rich and malevolent Corporate hacks (The Job Creators!) and are so friggin’ ignorant they don’t even realize they’re doing it.
Robert and Tim you two are frothing at the mouth.Calm down gentleman.Let me buy you a cup of Joe.We know our message well.Your attempts to muddy the waters by causing confusion, retreat, defeat ,and surrender really work better on the left .Your wasting bullets.
I have listened to your reasoning that in effect all tea party members are being hypocritical. That whole Bush thing is a bone in your mouth you will be shaking/talking about for the next 50 years Im sure.(And let us both agree that Bush was no conservative, or tea party member)
At this point guys there is no tea party- except as an ideal. It’s power is in the power of its ideas moving forward. To imagine it has the power of prosecution of a standing, or a former president is really putting power where there is none. That is all up to one BARRACK OBAMA.We can give you our opinion. But thats it.Other than that all i see are a lot of insults toward those who believe differently the you.Common throughout the world. In this country you are being transcended.Look at any poll
Perhaps the GOP needs to retreat from the fringes where there are many strange bed-fellows and rally around some issue such as “Amercan jobs for Americans” or “Made in America with value, quality, and pride included.”
What is it that motivates or stimulates business and job growth, by providing incentives and inducements to invest in America? What can spur growth and cause people to spring into action while keeping the regulatory goad that protects both consumers and investors from preditors both without and within?
If I want to cut local sales taxes from over 9%, why give an additional 9% national sales tax the time of day? Those that benefit the most should pay the most — income tax. Those that buy the most are going to pay the most sales tax — just lower tax rates. Pass all the new taxes you want as long as my total tax rate is lower!
John that last sentence really made me wake up.”Pass all the new taxes you want as long as my(and by this I take it you mean both rich and poor) total tax rate is lower”.If i were you I would nail down the hatches and fill the moat. They are gonna be coming for you.
