With the bad news we’ve been talking about on the public broadcasting front, it’s worth pointing out a bright spot: On Monday (10/24/11), Charlie Rose featured a discussion of Occupy Wall Street with Chris Hedges and Amy Goodman.
Goodman made an important point about media coverage of the protests:
CHARLIE ROSE: Does it have anything in common with the Tea Party?
AMY GOODMAN: Well, it’s interesting you ask that. When the people gathered on September 16 and 17–what, 2000 people–hardly any coverage they got. If it was 2000 Tea Party activists who gathered on Wall Street, I would dare said there would have been 2,000 reporters there, if not more.
Watch the segment on the Charlie Rose website. And you can leave a comment there–as others already have–noting that it’s refreshing to see these voices on a show that doesn’t usually feature such guests.

I saw the program and felt it was clear, informative and most interesting. Only a very few of the Charlie Rose interviews can be so described. Can we have more of same?
Great program and so unlike his usual–yawn–conventional interviews. Amy looked so happy! Both she and Chris were terrific, and Charlie was totally journalistic and unsnarky–what an achievement.
Surprising, given how badly Charlie Rose treated Amy Goodman before.
wonder why the usa is so keen on attacking iran,.do they know what they letting themsevles in for,we in europe have no such inclinations,.
I heard Noam Chomsky say a few months back that as long as the American people allowed themselves to be doormats to the politicians, the media and the corporations, that is how we would be treated. It is so refreshing and encouraging to see the American media taking heed of the viability of the average American people. It took the rest of the media around the world and the protesters around the world to wake it up.
Also, with every tear gas canister and rubber bullet, the American police forces throughout the country show themselves to be the lackeys of the military/industrial/media/government complex. The message being sent to the whole world is that the system is broken and no band-aid will repair it. Let’s have a peaceful revolution for that is the only way to have an orderly transition, unlike Egypt and Libya, to name just a few around the world. Bless the American people for getting up off their couches and going out in the streets to take back their country. Support them with your donations. Just go on line and you will have no trouble finding places to donate. Power to the People.
Wow, that’s the best Charlie Rose interview I’ve ever watched. With a few exceptions, I quit watching Charlie 15 years ago or more after an interview with Alice Walker where he couldn’t have been more dismissive of her.
I agree that this is the best Charlie Rose interview I’ve ever seen. Surely there are others he could interview who could present the views of the vast numbers of people who are sick and tired of generals, war mongers, and corporate polluters justifying the status quo. He’d gradually pick up more viewers if he did so.
Charlie Rose is a corporate shill. More specifically he is a member of the Trilateral Commission. Not a well known fact.

I was lucky to catch this interview. Describing Charlie Rose as a corporate shill is nearly polite, I would say corporate toady. His fawning over the so-called elite is nauseating. He always came across as all show and no go with softball interviewing;most likely to curry favor and invitations to elitist goings on. He should be extremely grateful that Goodman and Hedges did not ignore him. They probably appeared for the greater good of our troubled nation.
I stopped watching Rose years ago because his guests were mostly people whose reputations were very tarnished. One that comes to mind is the fat guy with the heavy german accent – oh yes, Kissinger. What a dispicable soulless individual. Knowing all the covert stuff he pulled when buddy buddy with Nixon should have landed him in jail. But no. These guys seem to always get away with their crimes against humanity. Why would Rose bring him on as a guest? Then there was a period where he was promoting movie stars ad nauseum. I don’t know who he’s had on for some time now so imagine my surprise to read that Chris Hedge (Love that man) and the Star of Democracy Now – Amy Goodman were guests on his show. Is some Producer finally waking up at PBS? I’ll keep my eye posted to see if it’s more than a Blip. Who knows, I may just start watching again.
In the meantime, two days later he also had on Slavoj Zizek, to whom he was similarly hospitable, with much less of the interrupting and the long, rambling, strangely leading questions which have been hallmarks of Rose’s style for so long.
Still only two data points, but maybe Rose is turning over a new leaf?
.. and actually having Mr. Rose listen more and speaking less was absolutely wonderful.
Having Amy and Chris on Charlie Rose was like a breadth of fresh air especially since the first segment of that show featured Paul Volker for about a half hours.
Volker was same old, same old, as you can imagine a former chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank would be!
It was interesting that Charlie let both Amy and Chris speak without his usual interruptions, sometimes at critical points that guests are making. I think he was entirely satisfied with both of them. Without question, Amy Goodman has the best news show anywhere. It’s broadcast on WBAI (wbai.org or wbai FM 99.5 in New York) daily. You can get it anytime of wbai archives or directly on Democracy Now.org, Amy’s show. Chris Hedges is one of the best speakers for the progressives at this time and speaks with a voice similar the Noam Chomsky’s, Ralph Naders, etc. In fact, the three of them could be an excellent troika to run America.
If you don’t listen to the many excellent shows on WBAI (a Pacifica show), then you are missing out on listener sponsored radio where free speech is numero uno! Pacifica also has stations in Berkley, Los Angeles, Washington D.C. and Houston. Just google Pacifica radio and you’ll get all the details.
Well I do watch Amy though she is basically unwatchable.Like watching a mortician explain procedure. And presentation and delivery aside ,she simply monotones lib spin -on and on and on.
Would the press turn out more for tea party over pee party?I really am not sold on that.I just went to a tea party get together ,and there were no reporters or interest that I have seen.I think Obama said it well.He said so much is happening on so many sides that he will wait to see who gets”voted off the island” before he jumps into the fray.Good enough.WE will be waiting
An excellent interview. I had given up on Charlie Rose and would not have seen it if a friend had not called it to my attention. Chris Hedges and Amy goodman are both top-notch courageous journalists.
Amy and Chris really did a great job. Charlie looked like he was having a root canal.
YES! A welcome addition to an often centrist emphasis…we need to listen very carefully to dissent, questioning, unconventional solutions, to not miss a significant trend, or an opportunity to address a problem, and not be blind to the discontent growing out of genuine misery, fear, unaddressed needs, despair, but focus on first hand experiences and creative, effective responses….the world is in trouble and we can’t just keep celebrating the acceptable winners…We’re always watching. Thanks, J.Spock
I’m shocked! Reality on the Charlie Rose program! What next?
Charlie Rose do a substantial interview without giving himself a pat on the back every 10 minutes? He was told to do it, PBS needs to look good as the network comes down on one of its other hosts for reporting on Occupy. He is a shill and he was told to go easy and throw the “left” a bone. If I’m not right you’ll see more progressive shows from him, if I’m right you will not see any.
Certainly one of his better interviews. But then with the two guests he would have to fight them to make it poorer.
What a great surprise to see your interview with Amy Goodman and Chris Hedges. I have been a fan of your Mr. Rose for a long time. I follow Amy Goodman on Link TV, which is a most informative TV Station. It is difficult to get the whole story on what is going on in the world!
I enjoyed your series on the human brain.
Keep up the good work!
