BBC (10/11/23)
This week on CounterSpin: In the wake of the October 7 attacks by Hamas and the ensuing bombing campaign from Israel on the Gaza Strip, many people were surprised that CNN‘s Fareed Zakaria aired an interview with a Palestinian activist who frankly described the daily human rights violations in Gaza, the right of Palestinians to resist occupation and apartheid, and how any tools of resistance they choose are deemed violent and punishable. Such statements aren’t controversial from an international law or human rights perspective, but they stand out a mile in elite US media suffused with assumptions listeners will know: Palestinians attack, Israel responds; periods of “calm” are when only Palestinians are dying; stone-throwing is terrorism, but cutting off water is not.
“War is not the time for context” still seems to be the mantra for many in the US press. But there is, around the edges, growing acknowledgement of the dead end this represents: showing hour after hour of shocking and heart-wrenching imagery, in a way that suggests violence is the only response to violence—when so many people are looking for another way forward.
We’ll talk with Phyllis Bennis from the New Internationalism project at the Institute for Policy Studies.
Transcript: In Gaza, ‘We Have to Do the Hard Work of Looking at Context’
Plus Janine Jackson takes a quick look back at recent press coverage of Saudi Arabia, Nicaragua, US political division and the Federal Reserve.

Stop calling this WAR it is so far from being a War. A war is when you have two facing each other with similar resources like a Navy, an Airforce. etc. This is a massacre on a giant scale and the world should sanction Israel to the hilt plus boycott all and everything from Israel.
Stateless people trapped in a reservation – the cutting off of water and electricity is an international crime and Israel must face full condemnation for their inhumanity. The West and its news media is totally controlled by Zionists hence the non-stop propaganda, they are even using AI to generate horrific picture so they can continue their genocidal massacre of citizens of GAZA. If Israel is not stopped it will be confirmation that the West has lost all humanity/civilization and has been taken over by Zionist Evil.
The reality of day-to-day life living under a brutal Israeli siege – trapped in the world’s largest open-air prison housing 2.5 million people living under Israeli oppression and the daily threat of bombing and ethnic cleansing by the regime in Tel Aviv which enjoys the full sponsorship and backing of the United States government and the UK.
MAJOR media in the USA has failed us all. For example—where is the truth of what Israel has been doing to the Palestinians since—–forever. Thousands crammed into such a small piece of land. And now, what does Israel say—well they seem to want to condemn the Palestinians as the disgusting group who have the nerve to ask for their land back—–of course that land theft began in 1948,,,,FIFTY YEARS AGO—-and yet, the USA props up Israel and ignores the Palestinians.
The holocaust in WW 2 happened long ago—-but somehow and for insane reasons, it
seems that the Neo-Holocaust is now totally belonging to Israel.
1948 was 75 years ago.
The deep irony of calling your site “FAIR” while carrying text like this is remarkable:
“the daily human rights violations in Gaza, the right of Palestinians to resist occupation and apartheid, and how any tools of resistance they choose are deemed violent and punishable.”
This was published a week after the “tools of resistance” included rape, torture, murder of babies, children, elderly, etc. The daily human rights violations in Gaza, a place Israel left nearly 20 years ago, are committed by Hamas which oppresses women, executes the LGBTQ, and crushes freedom of press, speech, and religion. The article applies the term “apartheid” to Gaza, an area ethnically cleansed of Jews with an elected leadership that seeks to ethnically cleanse Jews from Israel, a country where Arabs have full and equal rights, representation in parliament and on the supreme court…and yet somehow I don’t think the author was referring to apartheid as executed by Hamas.
Have you no shame?
