Sanaa, Yemen (cc photo: Yahya Arhab/European Pressphoto Agency)
This week on CounterSpin: It’s worth our while to think about why everyone we know is talking about Ukraine and Russia’s unlawful incursion—and equally worthwhile to ask why the same principles of concern don’t seem to apply in other cases. Those feelings don’t have to fight. But to hear Yemen put forward as just an example of an underconsidered concern is galling from the same people who underprioritized it in the first place.
Yemen is not a rhetorical device. It’s a country of human beings in crisis. We talk about that with Yemeni activist and advocate Shireen Al-Adeimi, who is also assistant professor of education at Michigan State University.

Also on the show: Sarah Bloom Raskin was up for a job at the Federal Reserve. Everyone was for her nomination, including the bankers she would oversee. So why did she withdraw her nomination, and what does it tell us about the possibility of making any advances at all in facing the reality of climate change? Helping us see why issues media divide are completely related is David Arkush, managing director of the climate program at Public Citizen.

“Yemen is not a rhetorical device. It’s a country of human beings in crisis.” Yup … and meanwhile on the key topic of the year that Fair.org doesn’t want to discuss broadly. The Russian siege in Ukraine is utilizing a military tactic popularized in medieval times, which is designed, to destroy a population through indiscriminate bombing, starvation and terror. This tactic allows the Russians attacking force to spare their own soldiers the cost of entering a hostile city. Instead, the civilians (mostly women and children) are the ones left to die without water and food. Alternately, how about a story on the 2 million plus Ukrainian citizens who have crossed the into Poland in fear of their lives ? Nyet (they said)
THIS particular story is about Yemen. Maybe you could try to stay on topic?
Yes comrade, going forward I will try to stay on topic and stick with the party doctrine, it’s core principles and stay away from any independent thoughts.
In no manner whatsoever, could I be mistaken for being your “comrade.”
Yes Vlad ,,,, errrr rather comrade.
A little prickly huh ? Too close to home I imagine. Well, continue to adhere the party doctrine. You are a total hypocrite as someone else in this thread pointed.
Methinks you doth have multiple screen names.
Spot-on, José. Fair’s general silence on Ukraine is shameful.
You do comprehend that Fair is NOT a conventional news organization, right?
Well that’s a hoot and real funny. Translation ? We get paid well for this written propaganda.
Oh… so your affectations of ignorance, are not a manner of pretense.
I doubt very seriously employees of FAIR make inordinate salaries. And positively nowhere in the neighborhood of David Muir for reasonably truthful reporting by FAIR, AS opposed to the tranquilizing propaganda of the corporate entertainer..
Sounds like something that would be orchestrated from Creech air force base in Nevada. Are you consciously projecting Mr Balart? Or did it just happen?
Amazingly insightful guests again this week, providing the important context ignored by most media outlets.
The withdrawal of the Raskin nomination is merely more evidence of the obvious dysfunction of our state… and the extremely high probability that corporate stooges will inevitably obtain any (and all) appointed positions of power.
Hey Bradley, you are both a hypocrite and amazingly funny. Any reason you don’t even take own advise by staying on topic in this thread or perhaps address the 500 pound Putin gorilla in the room ?? Do you really think ANYONE gives a shit about someone named Raskin withdrawing from a Fed banking position ?? Know anyone named Vladimir BTW?
Nothing in my comment is off-topic, but that probably escapes you as well.
The press and all media is replete with Ukraine, there is nothing BUT Ukraine everywhere. Yet, let someone say a word about western obliteration of lives in Yemen, and out come the mindless bots, probably paid to post, about ‘party line’ on Fair. We must all March in lock step, right? Just step over the death of Yemenis.
Thanks for unexceptionally covering important issues Janine!
