There was big news coming out of Ukraine late Saturday and early Sunday morning. Armed, pro-Russia militants had seized several buildings in the eastern city of Slavyansk. And naturally you want to book the most knowledgeable regional experts on these matters…. Either that or you wake up John McCain.
Here’s Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer (4/13/14) kicking off the interview:
And we are joined now by Sen. John McCain, who was recently in Ukraine and more recently was sound asleep, when we got a hold of him at 6:00 this morning and told him about these developments and asked him to join us.
McCain ran through his usual routine: Putin is behind all of this, he’s emboldened by Barack Obama’s weakness, we should arm Ukrainians to fight the Russians, Russia is a “gas station masquerading as a country” and so on. It probably would have been easier to run old tape of McCain on a previous episode of Face the Nation; after all, he’s far and away the most popular guest on the CBS chat show (FAIR Blog, 9/26/11).
Alternatively, the show could consider booking guests who have something new to say–or at least were aware of the situation you’re asking them to comment on before you woke them up. Just a thought.

John McCain is nothing more than a frustrated, bitter and jealous old man. Since McCain’s two stunning presidential landslide defeats, he’s no longer mentally competent to hold a senate seat. McCain isn’t a qualified expert on foreign policy or the military. All McCain is, is a war thirsty, war hungry warmongering war nut. That the Defense and Oil Industries own.

McCain is no favorite of mine but really, what on earth is wrong with being asleep at 6:00am on Sunday morning?
Miss the point much, Roger?
The corporate newsmedia interviews warmonger McCain again and again. What else is new? What about Ambassador Nuland having a background with Dick Cheney of all people?
Mr Williams: The problem isn’t that McCain was asleep at 6:00 AM, the problem is they woke up the old guard dog who said “bark, bark, bark, blah, blah, blah” and then promptly went back to sleep, mentally.
I still don’t see why it was a “revealing moment”.
Amy Goodman brought Prof. Stephen Cohen (from NYU) to Democracy Now, this week… which was THE BEST commentary/analysis I have heard or seen anywhere. A knowledgeable fellow, with an historical perspective to offer- and no axe to grind- was the best antidote to the knee-jerk warmongers. I actually Learned something! ^..^
Do a lot of the people in Congress have investments in bomb, plane, and weapons businesses? This country is way too crazy about wars, so there must be big money in them.
I am also wondering about the state of the State Dept. and that Ms Nuland person, and “F the EU.” it’s amazing that this nation has any street creds left. It’s hard for many nations and even many citizens to believe much of anything that anyone says anymore in the news, or in these strange pundit programs. Maybe the Sunday talk shows should just be turned over to political cartoonists.
Barbara, you got right to the point. The media will never deal with what is the key issue. Never going to happen.
You might all be interested in this commentary from a columnist for the (right-wing) British broadsheet the Daily Telegraph – he’s very well informed and doesn’t say what one might expect: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjjDKgUDym4 I seriously recommend it.
Everytime I see McCain I can’t believe he was a presidential candidate. Then when I think he picked a young Alaskan governor who whatever her qualities- had so little experience.Add that to the lefts candidate.A man without even the smallest qualification for the job he now holds. And at his side a drunken fool who like McCain I believe to be in the early stages of dementia. The same question explodes in my mind.THIS IS THE BEST WE GOT!!!!!!
