Finally, they will have a voice in the corporate media (New York Times, 9/19/11):
When Discovery Communications set out to reformat HD Theater, the nine-year-old home of high-definition documentaries, its executives assessed the crowded cable programming landscape and asked what was missing–where there was “white space,” as one later put it.
What was missing, they decided, was a channel for the Rich Man–the successful, college-educated man who earns $150,000 or more a year and who wants to know how to spend his time and money.
That’s how Velocity was hatched. Replacing the low-rated HD Theater on October 4, Velocity is being billed as a high-end men’s lifestyle channel about fast cars, fancy auctions and football stars.
At long last, the unjust marginalization of wealthy male consumers is beginning to come to an end.

It’ll be interesting to see just who advertises on this channel.
(Well, I won’t see, as I can’t justify the cost of a cable subscription for the dreck offered.)
Although it’s ostensibly aimed at those able to afford a life of excess, given the Pavlovian training to salivate at the sight of ostentation, you’d have to think many at a fraction of that income level will tune in.
So, would this be a good ad buy for Walmart and Taco Bell, as well as Mercedes Benz?
Or would that harsh the channel’s vibe?
It’s about time…Rush Limpblow tells me everyday how that Kaynean Upsetter in the “white” house is keeping me down by using Akorn and the Blackety Panters to steal my votes and lunch money…
I sure do hope that one of the dwindling number of blue-collar-friendly taverns in the area decide to carry this channel! It can only stimulate an awareness and appreciation for the long-overdue “class war”. ^..^
Fantastic.I love the inherent class warfare that instantly raises up over this from the left.Remember “LIFESTYLES FOR THE RICH AND FAMOUS”?How about cribs? There has been any number of shows on the most fortunate among us.And American as hell, we all believe that could be us, with a lot of hard work ,or plain old dumb luck.I would never of termed it white space. That was wrong. There are people of all shades that are enjoying the maximum fruits this country can offer.Leaving the rest of us in the “green space”with envy.
michael e:
many liberals believe in the american dream, that work ethic, smarts, and a bit of luck could bring you success (and if you measure success as wealth and fame, so be it)
but the issue we have regarding ‘class warfare’ is our economy is being pushed to serve the upper class at the expense of the middle. our government is making alliances to help the upper class, who do not need help, while relying on the middle class for election. it is this dishonest policy we take umbrage with.
the american dream does not cover a few hundred people owning the rest of us. if that is your goal, it’s not particularly egalitarian or, dare I say American.
shame, though, about HD theater. when I had cable, it was my favorite channel.
Well liberal Schmuck I agree liberals believe in the work Ethic that brings the American dream(most).I also think they believe there is no work ethic at the top.Just greed and graft, or luck,or privilege made on the backs of others ,or fostered in some ‘agreement with the government”My union friends work 8-4, five days a week.I work 14 hour days six days a week,.On call round the clock.Ok that makes me stupid but….lets get real. Our economy is not being pushed to serve the upper class. We are the engines of this economy. We use more,we spend more,we are taxed more, and yes if we have the time…. we enjoy more.Dems the facts. And the upwardly mobile at the top tier do not hurt the middle class. In any way shape or form. Now the 46%paying nothing certainly do.Do the math.As far as needing help …well there is only one real form of help the government can give to the middle class moving up, or the upper class holding on.Get out of our way!And what few hundred people own you pray tell?It is a great canard but name names. They can’t raise your taxes.Claim your land.Send your children to war.Bill gates is worth a couple of beans.Think if Obamas mantra of “When is enough enough”was actually applied to him.Think if he was halted at his first million. What would the world have lost? When did success and profit become dirty words except when used in the form of confiscatory taxes? What was Obama inauguration date?
Does Stephen Colbert still run his “Platinum” segment (for the super-wealthy)? Mind you, if you’re not über rich you’re not supposed to watch it.
