Washington Post columnist David Broder rounds up some “non-partisan” budget experts– one of whom, oddly enough, was John McCain’s Social Security adviser during his 2000 campaign — to agree with him that the Democrats’ healthcare bills are too expensive. He closes with this:
The challenge to Congress — and to Obama — remains the same: Make the promised savings real, and don’t pass along unfunded programs to our children and grandchildren.
This advice would be easier to take from someone who didn’t just write that Obama should escalate the Afghanistan war because of the”urgent necessity is to make a decision — whether or not it is right.” Good thing that war doesn’t cost anything— or that if it does, our grandchildren won’t mind paying for it.

Broder, like his fellow old-timer WaPo columnist George F. Will, appear to be suffering from early signs of Alzheimer’s. Broder has taken up residence in a world of his own making.
When will this irrelevant old fart die? What earthly good is he?
Can’t wait for Broder, Will, Cal Thomas, and Thomas Friedmen to exit the stage, i.e. drop dead. These men have driven our country into fits of war madness. Friedman just admitted on the Daily Show that his cowardice after 9/11 led to his cheerleading for a war against Iraq (Huge Mistake!!!). Hope Jonah Goldberg is left on an ice flow for polar bears to eat. Americans need to stop listening to these well paid pundits, read the news, and decide for themselves
Hurrah for FAIR!!!
I’m 81 years old and cannot believe what has happened to my country. More than fifty years ago, Charles de Gaulle declared America had gone grandeur to decadence in just a few years. He hadn’t seen the likes of bush and cheney who tortured prisoners of war, rendered suspected terrorists for torture, and murdered prisoners of war–all acts mimicking the Nazi “contractors” (like Blackwater now) designated Einsatzgruppen.
The bush (attacking Iraq) takes a page from Hitler’s book (attacking Poland, 1939) on armed aggression, and the Republicans (nothing but GD fascists) act as cheer leaders! Obama promises change but offers a program that’s nothing more than bush lite.
Fortunately for me, I can see an early end to this nightmare but not so for most young people. For them the nightmare is just beginning. Soon America will lose an entire city or two from a nuclear device, and, of course, they will loudly proclaim, “How could anyone attack us in this manner?” That’s a question they should pose an Iraqi, Afghan, Pakistani, Palestinian, or any one of thousands of other people on this planet who have been on the receiving end of our terrorism. If you need a little help with this comment, read your daily newspaper or William Blum’s “Killing Hope”!
I am, also,81 years old and I worry that DeGaulle might be right for once but I had my hope rekindled listening to the young Barack Obama describe the pitiful record of Congress on health care as he spoke to a Community College in Pennsylvania Friday; ‘ … we want a stable system that is not subject to instant change …that long (excruciating) process is what we call Democracy… ‘ thanks for reminding us that the boring sausage makers in Washington are important but not worth listening to.
If Obama has hope in the midst of gross partisanship, lies, opportunists and flawed human beings and he can keep his long view, his hope and his sense of humour … so can I
Conservatives always support gargantuan spending for wars, and bailouts for Wall St., but never for the working class.
The people in this country are slowly beginning to wake up, but will it be too late? I am so sick of corruption in every part of this society, and it is getting worse. I do believe that this sad state of affairs will not last, we are heading for better days, we just need to endure. In the meantime, what we can do is to work to become better human beings, and live our lives in service to others. There is only one place that we can bring about change, and that is in our own hearts.
Conservatives love for war is so perpetual that they need a new name, perhaps the Mars Brothers.
People are tired of the wars we are involved in unless you are a republican with none of your relatives in the war or you are an independent who is really a republican who does like war and has no loved ones in the war. President Obama made a tough decision. We were attacked and it was from this area in Afghanistan and Pakistan. I can only hope that President Obama’s wise decisions will help keep our soldiers safe and will help them catch or kill the terrorists who attacked America, and will manage to make this area safer for the average man, woman and child who lives there.
