Witless commentary and breathtaking hypocrisy are no strangers to Fox News, but Bill O’Reilly was in rare form on June 1. Discussing Joe McGinniss, the journalist who moved next door to Sarah Palin’s family home in Alaska in order to write about her, O’Reilly declared the move “immoral” and maybe even unconstitutional: “He’s intruding upon them, all right? Their pursuit of happiness, which is guaranteed by the Constitution, basically has dropped 100 percent because he’s there.” (The “pursuit of happiness” phrase actually appears in the Declaration of Independence, not the Constitution.)
About now, listeners who have followed O’Reilly’s sordid career are probably recalling the Fox host’s practice of having his camera crews ambush news subjects at their homes, on vacation, even when they are with their children–in other words, “intruding on them, all right?” Of course, by O’Reilly’s lights, only intrusions targeting those he cares about raise moral or “constitutional” questions. That is the beauty of an utter lack of self-awareness.
O’Reilly’s guest, dyspeptic former CBS reporter Bernard Goldberg, who often engages O’Reilly in a sort of stupid competition, was a voice of reason on this segment. On the Constitution, Goldberg said McGinniss had the right to live anywhere he wanted. But Goldberg didn’t totally disappoint. While disagreeing that they were “immoral,” Goldberg did say these sorts of intrusions were “wrong” and “creepy”–referring, of course, to McGinniss’ intrusions, not O’Reilly’s.
O’Reilly is a buffoon. Too bad there are many seriously stupid people who listen to him.

I think its time that we retire the likes of O’Reilly et al. Retire to actually checking on facts before he or anyone else tries the smear game. It is not alright that O’Reilly can do the spying on people, but if someone else does, he gets upset. The house next to Palin was for sale or rent I am not sure. However if the Palins wanted so much privacy, why didn’t they buy it for their kids, after all she is a grandmother and could be there. Sarah has made millions, she could have afforded the expense. If they truly wanted privacy, then they should not be in the limelight. She should not be involved in speaking engagements and signing books, which was ghost written for her. Privacy would be that she and her family would resume their lives prior to her being a part time governor. You betch ya!
O’Reilly is a classic conservative, immature, insecure and fearful of just about everything. I’m scared of terrorists so let’s destroy our economy and constitutional rights; I’m scared of boogey men so let’s all carry guns; I’m scared of dying so let’s pretend there’s a benevolent super-being waiting for us in the clouds; I’m scared of free thoughts, socialism, communism, liberalism, higher education, homosexuals, immigrants, etc. They attack their scary fears like small children, first with crying and screaming, then irrational anger and hatred, finally finding themselves alone and quivering – wondering what horrible malady will befall them next. They can’t stand on their own, speak with intelligence and insight on any subject, present a cogent argument or apparently read more than one book. Such a very sad existence that so many seem unable to overcome, perhaps because they coddle each other and cling to their prejudices that bind them together. These massive insecurities are easily preyed upon by corporate influences driving our national policies while playing to their fears, like taking candy from a baby – almost literally.

Bottom line here is it is not unconstitutional.Not illegal.And it is his right to live anywhere he wants.Celebs deal with this creepy intrusion on their lives everyday.Part of the price to they pay.If he is dangerous I feel confidant the authorities will act accordingly.But It is also prudent that Sarah openly acknowledged that she felt creeped out by the fact that he was feet from where her daughters swam and sunbathed.Nothing any mother would not feel.Bill O’reilly and other conservatives need not feel the need to defend her or any conservative candidate over such shanannigans.It is what it is.And Every dog has his day.The day will come when Obama and his children will have a house of their own not painted white.And some crumb will move in feet from where his girls swim in their pool.And just a fence away from those young ladies- the slime will be writing a hit piece on that family dynamic.The ying and the yang.We live with it.But i will bet ya Michelle will be on guard. Well, michael, from my perspective, your second paragraph would be more correct if you replaced the word “right” with “left” and vice versa. The point is that we all have our biases and there is evidence to be found supporting both sides (albeit not always equally…). I’ll take direct issue with your claims of the specific things that most Americans want from our government, because a significant portion of the current anger towards the government is from the left as well, and some of the earlier blog posts on this site give evidence for that.
I just find it so frustrating that all the news reports I read lately about politics talk about how nothing can get done because the public so badly wants to cut the deficit. What about those polls that put jobs first? Why isn’t the narrative that politicians are arrested by the right, which is concerned with the deficit, while the public is begging for more to be done? That’s what seems to be happening, in any case.
Thanx Roy for the thoughtful reply.Bias aside we must agree we are in a non sustainable cycle.We are spending more than we are taking in.Beggaring ourselves and our children’s children.Government jobs or those controlled by government now make up over 50% of all jobs.We are flat busted broke and beyond.Yet this government passes one huge cradle to the grave social program after another and more to come.Soon we WILL- be a center left country because everybody will be supported in one way or another by government.It is a self sustaining cycle and death spin.More taking than giving.Look at Greece and Europe.We must change and soon.
No, history has shown that increasing government spending to get out a recession is the way to go, and reining in spending will just make things worse. Sure, it sucks that we’re racking up such a huge debt, but it certainly isn’t clear that we’re anywhere near defaulting. The deficit has increased a lot since Obama got into office, but about 1/3 of that increase(1) is not spending, but decreased revenue as a result of the poor economy. Fix the economy and the deficit will shrink, or leave the economy alone and cut spending and the deficit will shrink. Why do you only focus on the second option, and why is it only the programs that will help people spend more money that you want to cut?
A similar question: where was the outrage when the neocons pushed us into two unnecessary wars (which you might remember are very expensive)? At least the left’s spending ideas are there to help people.
