Earlier this week (1/10/11) I wrote, given how short corporate media’s memories are, “Let’s hope that when someone convenes a civility in media discussion in 2020, they don’t ask Glenn Beck to weigh in.”
No need to wait that long. Time magazine has convened a panel to talk about civility in our public discourse. And the first contribution is from…well, take a look:
Now in fairness, the listis alphabetical. But seriously– was Michael Savage too busy?

I hope he brings his blackboard and chalk and wears those glasses to give him that “intellectual” look.
Seriously though, Time’s Civility Panel just gives Beck and others in his crowd legitimacy and a mainstream platform on which to ride his hobby horse. But I guess Time needs to be balanced and objective because all views, even false ones, are true.
Given what passes for “the left” in the US and A, something tells me this list will list dramatically to starboard.
Time invites Beck to a civility panel, yet CHOOSES to ignore the landslide popular vote of Julian Assange as Time “Person of the Year.”
I guess we see who they answer to.
Good point, gary. My favorite Beck pose is when he bends over and directs his big ass towards the camera whilst making some incredibly stupid (and unintentionally comical) point. His own way of telling his admirers what he really thinks of them. Perhaps Time’s use of Beck in this way is meant as some kind of joke, or their own special way of telling their devoted readers what they really think of them.
P.S.: Yes, Doug Latimer, yes.
“To do my part to further and honor that historic balance, I have challenged the media and those in politics to take a firm stance against those advocating riots and violence. I hope they will join me. Either way, the truth is clear: God has truly blessed this extraordinarily civil republic.”- Glenn Beck

Is this trying to have it both ways?
“Is this trying to have it both ways?”
MG, I take it that’s a rhetorical question, so to speak?
For those who may have missed it:

All of our pundits both left and right, do a great service in alerting us to those things they feel passionately about. Sometimes it is entertainment value, sometimes it is knowledge imparted. The market place chose Oprah and Rush.Bill Mahre,John Stewart,Beck and Hannity.Olbermann and O’rielly and quite a few others to be the success they have become. That is the judge and jury.Beyond that there are laws in place that handle threats or slander.American politics have always been charged with emotion and passion, and yes sometimes nasty rhetoric. If ya can’t stand the heat……Time will not find any stat that indicates a rash of violence due to right wing rhetoric no matter how hard they try to find or manufacture it.Because most of those they would point to(above mentioned)are good people who never advocate such things. The examples on Beck are spurious and often laced within a comedy or parody framework. He is an easy target like SNL.What next?Stop people from lampooning our officials because it lowers peoples faith in government, and causes uprisings? What will John Stewart do?This all come from a kickback reaction from the effectiveness of right wing talk show hosts in uncovering the failures and values of the left.It is at its core a move to silence that arm.
The market place chose? Or are most scripted soap operas with manufactured issues and a never ending story? People paid to blabber that run their mouth on empty.
Well John they “play” and get payed at the pleasure of the people.Four hours a day, every day. When they fail to produce they die.Look at Air(head) America.Dont like it?Only takes a flick of a switch. So yes people are paid to blabber and run their mouth on empty(to some). And full (to others.)Obama every once in a blue moon gives a carefully crafted ,written, telaprompted, message that usually is empty blabber and complete nonsense.God bless america
