Of the 24 members of Congress who have appeared three or more times in 2011 on any of the five Sunday morning shows (i.e., CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox or CNN), according to Roll Call‘s ongoing tally, 16, or two-thirds, have been Republicans. Just seven, or 29 percent, have been Democrats. (The other one was Sen. Joe Lieberman.)
We’ve looked at the right-wing slant on Sunday morning before (Extra!, 9-10/01, 12/10), but this more-than-2-to-1 bias is extreme. For the record, Democrats control one of the two houses of Congress.
You can probably guess who the Sunday shows’ favorite congressional guest is.

How narcissistic is the media – here are their preferences and thus their report!
Amazing that the long-standing Sunday morning bias is actually getting worse.
They’re not Lurching to the Right — They’ve Been on the Right since the Clinton impeachment debacle! They’re just getting more blatant about it — dropping all pretenses of being “fair and balanced” — This I believe the FCC could address, correct? They’re not cable, after all.
And that’s why I no longer watch them.
What did we expect? The corporate media is spinning the corporate narrative.
Might it be that the Democrats are less interesting, because there are just so few ways to spin the truths, e.g. Senator Bernie Sanders. The Republicans come up with so many varied distortions of the truth that I find it interesting how they must increase distortions until they become either unintelligible or blatantly insane, e.g. Rep. Eric Cantor.
When FAIR has demonstrated this tendency before the excuse for the right-leaning bias was that Republicans controlled the Congress and the White House. What’s excuse now?
And that’s why I’ve never watched them.
They have been on the ‘right’ for some time, they are just continually lurching further to the right.
The excuse now, Duncan, is that the Republicans still control the whole shebang, don’t they? Here’s a riddle, dressed as an enigma, posing, ultimately, as horror: When the Republicans are the majority party in the Senate, they control the Senate. When the Republicans are the minority party in the Senate, they control the Senate. When the Republicans are the minority party in the Senate, and there’s a Democrat in the White house, (like now), and the House is run by a tinal cabal of lunatics, the Senate minority leader is the defacto President.
One thing is for sure: No “journalist” ever (never ever!) wants to be considered a liberal by the conservatives. Being a suspected liberal in official beltway journalism is far worse than being caught with a live boy or a dead woman. That’s what makes a clown like Wolf Blitzer actually ask Anthony Weiner about the provenance of the mysterious underpants (“you mean you can’t identify these underpants as your own?” or something very similar). It’s why so many ill-considered and ill-conceived lies pass unmolested by any probing “journalists”–why rock the boat, and possibly be cast out? It’s better to actually forward the idea that Republicans are something other than the simple-minded fanatics, well-paid liars, or angry morons that they invariably are.
Never watch the Sunday Morning Follies!
When Tea Partiers complain about The Media’s “liberal bias” they are onto something: It’s the neo-liberal bias that dominates both political parties, especially as elections approach. It’s what Howard Zinn labeled the bi-partisan consensus. It’s not Republican, or Democratic; it’s corporate. Corporations have some concern about their reputations, since they could be damaged by really negative PR–but only if it is broadcast. Thus, as long as the messages are kept within boundaries acceptable to corporate ideologies, a diversity of opinions will be presented, but it will not represent real diversity, or critical thought. All of us need to teach our communities how to watch, listen to, and read our media–including counting up the time and number of appearances of people with clear political allegiances. THEY won’t stop; thus WE have to get smarter!
We vote in these law makers because we are duped by a Media that is bought and paid for by corporations. Lawmakers quickly learn that it is corporations that get lawmakers re-elected, and they start working for corporate issues rather than what is necessary and generally what the people want.
Since the consolidation of the networks under a few mega corporations, their priorities iwith regard to our warmaking economy, our energy solutions as well as our Las Vegas type banking system, and our already corporatized medical system, it is no wonder that things have not been going well for the under and the middle-class.
But the elites are doing fine. They have vetoed the forces of nature (Global Warming).
(You can’t fool mother nature though).
I am not surprised that Sunday News Shows are far from Fair and Balanced.
Elections have to be de-corporatized to get us on the right track.
The problem goes beyond government.
The banks and the defense dept. control all the purse strings. Until we can unentrench them you can expect just enough democrats and just enough republicans to go along with anything they want to get away with in congress. how else can you explain that more than 70% of the American public wants the troops pulled from these foreign countries but rather than listen to their constituents they continue to go into more and more countries, wasting even more of our precious resources. We need for our taxes to be spent right here in the U.S.
The amazing thing about the lib’ral media’s fascination with McCain is that they bring him in to discuss foreign policy and international affairs, especially news concerning the Middle East, subjects where he has shown no real understanding…….
Yeah the last election I saw a real right wing bias.90% of profs in journalism schools align themselves with liberal beliefs. About that many journalists. The reason you are seeing this lurch to the right is because there is a “lurch to the right”People get it. People get that Obama(like john mcCain that A READER SPEAKS OF)does not have a clue. And he is the head honcho of the clueless dumbacrats. In the end the press will show what the people want. And right now that is a lurch to the right.Dont worry they hate reporting it as much as you hate hearing it.
PS…By the way anybody see the economic indicators this week?Complete disaster.
I always heard the japs killed our auto industry..Now here their industry has collapsed and we see no bounce.I still say Obama never ran a popsicle stand. After his term is over dont expect anyone to offer him the job.
Well, here’s more evidence of that “liberal bias” in the media. This has been one of the most successful pieces of propaganda Conservatives invented and have maintained for at least the past thirty years. It’s truly mind boggling, and facts and/or statistics don’t make a dent in the biggest mainstream media lie. It, in my opinion, poses a grave threat to our democratic republic.
